Ile du Havre-aux-Maisons at a Glance
The Île du Havre-aux-Maisons' bare landscape is the result of over-lumbering
over the last century, and its hills seem swept clean by ocean winds. Its western
side borders a lagoon
that supports a truly singular ecosystem, the perfect environment for keeping
populations of lobster, mussels and smelt healthy. Waters are held in by the
Dune
du Nord and the Dune
du Sud, a popular family beach, and guided tours
in a glass-bottomed boat are available.
Sainte
Madeleine Church features impressive sculptures by Leo Gérvais, and
La
Maison d'Eva-Anne is a historic home and fine example of island architecture.
Keeping sailors safe while they approach the shores, the views from the Alright
Cape lighthouse reach all the way to the Île
d'Entrée and into the island valleys, where smartly-trimmed houses
are scattered across the landscape. The Îles
were once a global exporter of herring, and Le
Fumoir D'Antan is a still-operational smokehouse using traditional means
to preserve the fish while adding a few secret ingredients for optimal taste.
